Manly gets behind Invictus Games Sydney 2018

Manly residents have shown their support for the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, presented by Jaguar Land Rover.

Member for Manly James Griffin hosted a community event, which featured a panel discussion on the power of sport and social connection to help servicemen and women overcome the physical and mental challenges that they face as a result of injuries sustained, both visible and otherwise, whilst serving their country.

“It was wonderful to see people from across our community join together to hear such an important message,” said Mr Griffin.

The event was a true community evening, with members of local RSL sub-branches, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, Surf lifesaving clubs, charities and high school students all coming together to learn from an incredible panel of inspirational speakers.

Among the panellists was Adrian Talbot, an Afghanistan Veteran and Invictus Games London 2014 Competitor; Garth Callender, an Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran and Author of After the Blast; Jacqueline Costello, Senior Army Psychologist and Ben Webb, Afghanistan Veteran and Manager of the Northern Beaches Veterans Centre.

“The key takeaway message from the panel discussion was that sport and physical activity, even something as simple as a walk with a friend, have a powerful role in healing and bringing us together,” said Mr Griffin.

“The panel included contemporary veterans who shared insights that everyday people can use to make sure they’re looking after their mental health. It was an inspirational night and a good way for our community to embrace the Invictus Games Sydney 2018.”

Founded by Prince Harry in 2014, the Invictus Games is an international sporting event for wounded, injured and ill veteran and defence personnel. The Games highlight the healing power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation, and generate a wider understanding of and respect for those who serve their country.

The Games also recognise the significant contribution made by family and friends in the recovery process and the challenges they share in supporting their wounded warriors. The competitors are invited to bring two friends and/or family members to share in their journey. Sydney will play host to almost 1000 friends and family who will travel from the 18 participating nations to support their loved ones.

“Behind every Invictus Games competitor is an amazing support network of friends and family, and that is why I am proud to share that Manly will work further with Invictus Games Sydney 2018 to host an event for family and friends on their arrival in October,” said Mr Griffin.

“The Manly community, from Shelly Beach to Dee Why, is a welcoming place. We know how important it is to support our family and friends, that’s why we’re so proud to welcome the family and friends of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 competitors to our beautiful part of the world,” he said.

The community event was supported by Freshwater Community Bank Branch and Manly Life Saving Club.
